Haiti is the poorest nation in the western hemisphere. Continual political unrest requiring the intervention of global peace-keeps - natural disaster, food shortages and catastrophic environmental degradation make daily life nearly unbearable.

These dificulties have prompted some non-profits, governmental and non-governmental agencies to suspend or limit their operations in the country. It has become a forgotten island nation. For SLM, our love and compassion for the children of Haiti will not allow us to take this course. While the work is challenging, sometimes dangerous and finacially difficult, especially in today's global economic recession, we cannot abandon the Haiti's next generation.
